This course is a development of the successful Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy (DPO) which was run successfully for 10 years by the Osteopathic Centre for Children (OCC). The MSc is a result of collaboration between the Foundation for Paediatric Osteopathy (formerly known as the OCC) and the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) and is validated by the University of Bedfordshire.
Students will benefit from the wealth of clinical experience available at the Foudation’s clinics in Clerkenwell, Manchester and South London together with the BSO’s expertise in osteopathic education. Students will have access to the BSO’s extensive library and learning resources as well as being able to take advantage of the learning resources available through the University of Bedfordshire.
The course runs over two years and the clinical component starts in October each year. Registration and the first teaching weekend takes place in September. The intake is limited by the number of clinical places, and is usually between 20 and 30.
The course consists of eight units. The seven non-clinical units are: birth and delivery; research and postgraduate learning; respiration; immune system; advanced applied anatomy; central nervous system and orthopaedics. These units are taught during specified weekends at the BSO’s premises in Southwark. Assessments consist of written case studies together with end of year written examinations. The eighth unit is a clinical unit which takes place at the Foudation’s clinics in Clerkenwell, Manchester and South London. Students will be expected to attend the clinic for one day a week for a minimum of forty six weeks each year. During this unit students will treat patients under the supervision of tutors and consultants. Students will receive termly clinic assessments and will be required to complete a portfolio of clinical learning based on critical incident analysis. The clinical learning portfolio takes the place of the research-based dissertations required in traditional MSc courses.
We are confident that this course will provide an interesting and challenging programme through which students can gain the knowledge and skills required to practise effectively in the field of paediatric osteopathy.
