Toddler Lordosis

Toddler Lordosis

Postby cr on Wed May 06, 2009 9:31 am

My daughter has just turned 2. I have noticed and become a bit concerned by the exaggerated curve of her lower back (lordosis).
Possibly related, possibly not: she does get some bad constipation fairly often - her stomach becomes visibly distended (which the lordosis exaggerates) until she finally poos.

I personally have a more curved lumbar than average, and would rather that she didn't have the same as an adult.

Would paediatric osteopathy be useful to help correct the lordosis, or will it just get better with time?

Thanks,
CR

Dear CR

As children develop posture they go through a series of changes to their spinal curves. Typically, toddlers will have an increased lordosis which will change as they grow and develop.

Without assessing your daughter it is impossible for me to give an opinion as to whether her lordosis is within normal limits. We'd be happy to assess her and in addition could give an opinion as to whether we can help her constipation. Some children with constipation respond well to osteopatic treatment.

best wishes
Nancy
